So I think I'm done with my mom's website for the time being. Take a peek here. She apparently needs some things added and/or changed, but I can't do anything about that until she tells me the info. But she seemed really pleased with what I've done. It's pretty basic, but I like it. My boss called me and my other co-worker, John, into her office yesterday around noon and told us someone called out on the night shift and she wanted to know if either of us would volunteer to work that shift. John had classes so it was pretty much up to me. I figured it wouldn't be so bad because afterwards she let me go home four hours early so I could get some sleep before I had to come back in at 11 PM. However, when you're not accustomed to sleeping for long periods of time during the day, it's really not something that comes naturally. So I only slept for about 2 and a half hours and then worked from 11 PM until 7 AM. My brain stopped working periodically throughout the night, but I still managed to perform a recovery on a donor without accidentally cutting out my own eye. Plus I didn't have to work my normal shift today which was awesome. I've been in sloth mode all day though, but I think I've earned it! My friend Sara from Boston is coming down tomorrow (I think). I'm looking forward to hanging out with her. She's a nut. Also, Lost comes back this Thursday. Apparently I have to watch it on Patrick's HD TV. I sometimes regret getting him that thing because now he never wants to make the trek over here because my TV is so outdated. I suppose it is, but I have a soft spot for my TV because I saved for a whole year for it when I was in college. It's more than just unnecessary wideness! It's about a girl who dared to dream, and one day got her TV. 01*24*08 Apparently my site has been down for a few days. I don't check it every day because I know what I wrote last week, so I wasn't ever aware. In any case, everything is right as rain now! I just watched Once and then immediately purchased the soundtrack on iTunes. It was that good! I also saw Cloverfield on Friday night. I was expecting some horrible piece of crap, but I was pleasantly surprised...and scared. I do feel that they exploited 9/11-type footage to tap into the audience's fears, but they didn't use it too much, so I suppose it's semi-forgivable. As far as horror movies go though, I think it was a very effective movie. I was on-call early Sunday morning and got called in around 3:30. As I was walking down the stairs of my apartment building to get to the car waiting for me outside I heard an old woman's voice come out of nowhere and whine, "Stop using the stairs!" It was too late for a rebuttal and just too ridiculous of a statement for one anyway. Next time I'll jump out the window. But seriously, shut your friggen door and go to sleep lady! She sits behind the stairs in a lawn chair, so of course she's going to hear every step on the stairs amplified! Then as I was walking from the eye bank's car to the hospital, a woman walked out of a bodega with a golf club, set down a pack of cigarettes on the sidewalk and proceeded to whack that pack down the street. Weird night. Sunday night Patrick, his roommate, his roommate's girlfriend and I went to a comedy night at Union Hall. It was pretty hilarious. One of the jokes that keeps resounding in my head today had to do with the comparison people make about men's penises being as big as a baby's arm, and wouldn't it be funny if people reversed that statement and said a baby's arms looked like giant penises! Ha I giggle every time I think of that. We stuck around after that and played music trivia since Patrick and his roommate are huge music nerds...but mostly Patrick. We destroyed at least 10 other teams and came in first place. Afterwards we all went back to Patrick's and played Cranium. Patrick and I brawled throughout the game because we don't play nicely together...even though we were on the same team. In any case, we still won so it doesn't matter. We can't even play Scene It together because we get so mad at each other. We're too competitive and extreme sore losers. I was going to update this last night, but I've been working on my mom's website for her salon. It only took me a year, but I'm finally getting around to it. No plans for this weekend except I picked up an extra on-call shift Sunday morning again. So far I'm doing pretty well financially this year. I hope to have all the money I need for my upcoming trip by the end of next month. I can't get away soon enough. My routine is boring the crap out of me lately. 01*17*08 So much for that New Year's resolution to write in here more often. I have a cold and it's making me semi-miserable. Well, that and my boss. I really can't stand her! I don't think I'll be finding another job anytime soon though. Guess I just have to deal with this bullshit a bit longer. Sunday afternoon I did my laundry and went grocery shopping. I was racing back home with my groceries in my granny cart in order to get back to the laundromat as soon as my clothes were done drying (otherwise someone usually takes it upon themselves to take my clothes out for me). I was about half a block away from my apartment when I came upon a man, a little girl and a baby in a carriage. Said trio were standing still on the sidewalk waiting for something or someone. They all heard/saw me coming, but made no effort to move out of my way once I got there, so I had to make a detour onto a part of the sidewalk that was made of uneven brick (it was a tree bed). I was obviously having a difficult time trying to maneuver my cart over the bricks, but the man still made no attempt at helping or moving out of the way, so on I trudged. Just as I was almost onto even ground again, the right front wheel of my cart got caught and the whole thing flipped over, hitting me very hard in the shins and spilling out a bunch of items in the process. The man said, "Ooooh," about as emotionless as a corpse, and neither helped me out nor asked if I was ok. I was fucking furious and wanted to say a lot of things to him. But I've been that little girl with the asshole dad who people would yell at and it always made me feel really uncomfortable, so I figured I'd spare his children...or whomever's children they were. Hopefully they don't grow up to be as big a dickhead as that guy. That really hurt! Patrick and I are going to see Cloverfield tomorrow night. He has this obsession with seeing popular action/horror movies opening weekend at this theater on Court Street in Brooklyn. The crowd there usually promises to be obnoxious and rowdy, so they're guaranteed to shout out ridiculous comments all during the movie...particularly on opening weekend. While this is something I loathe, Patrick thinks it's friggen hilarious. So, I'll humor him and come along. I am freezing! I wish it would snow already. Every time they say we're going to have a snow storm it just rains. I would like at least one snow storm this season or it won't really feel like winter. Ah, that reminds me of the items I purchased today to combat global warming. That's right, I'm taking it all into my own hands! Anyway, these are pretty nifty. I like that they fold up small enough that I can carry them on me all the time and hopefully won't ever have to use a plastic bag again. Although, I will have to devise a new method for disposing of my cat's poop. Regardless, I feel good about my purchase! 01*09*08 I saw There Will Be Blood last night and thought it was absolutely amazing. I haven't been that impressed with a film in quite a while. Granted I haven't seen all the films that are Oscar-hopefuls this year, but I feel like this just blows the competition away. I saw No Country For Old Men and Eastern Promises, both of which I've heard nothing but rave reviews about; in my opinion they were good, but I didn't love them...not like I loved There Will Be Blood. Also, Daniel Day-Lewis does the most incredible job in this movie. He is my new favorite actor (I don't really think I had one before). His performance may be one of the best I've ever seen, and he better win every award for it. Go see it! 01*02*08 So I had a pretty good holiday season. Nothing too eventful happened (good or bad), and since I didn't really ask for much, I wasn't anticipating present-giving terribly. Patrick got me a gift certificate to H&M (which I'm almost done spending), Twin Peaks on DVD, the game Cranium, and a Beatles calendar. He met my brother and all went well--no fights or anything like that. In fact, Patrick seemed to be kind of like the buffer at Christmas; he was the guy everyone liked. He was our Switzerland. I think my mom finally got to know him better as well and she seemed to like him better. Not that I didn't think she liked him before, but she just never really seemed to care. New Year's was interesting this year. Patrick and his roommates threw a party at their place. It was a pretty good time initially, but I got pretty tired around 1-2 AM and wanted to go to sleep. That turned out not to be so easy since everyone was still at the party until after 4 AM. I kept threatening Patrick that I was going to go home to sleep, but in the end I stuck it out. Thankfully I didn't have a hangover in the morning. So I've been eating pretty carelessly and not exercising the past three weeks. I need to get back on track and shed these holiday pounds plus an additional 5 pounds would be nice. I had planned to start that today, but that didn't work out. Hopefully tomorrow proves to be more fruitful. Also, none of us at the eye bank got a holiday bonus this year and we are all pretty pissed off about it. Kind of makes me want to quit. I feel like I want to quit there really bad at least 3 times a year. If only I could find another job I'd somewhat enjoy where I'd make just as much money or more. Here are New Year's Pictures: 01*01*08 Happy New Year! I will try to write more often in here this year...hopefully starting tomorrow.
