Yet another cold, lazy winter weekend spent mostly indoors. Friday night I took a last minute on-call shift to somewhat makeup for the towing fee I had to pay Monday, so I just stayed home with my kitties. Luckily (or not since I made no extra money) I didn't get called in, so I got to sleep late Saturday. In the afternoon, I had a lock installed on my door. The locksmith quoted me $55 over the phone with a possible price increase if the work entailed more difficulties than normal. So when the guy got here, he surveyed my door and the lock I bought, and was about to get to work when I asked him what the price was again. He responded $55 plus $95 for installation. Of course I was a little more than livid at his response. He tried explaining all the hard work involved and blah blah, and I tried to explain to him that I was lied to and that his company was deceptive. After 10 minutes of negotiations, I talked him down to $100 total in cash. Still much more than I thought I'd pay, but a price I can live with. Bastards. Last night and today was mostly spent lazing around with Matt. We vowed to go out next weekend regardless of the temperature. Actually, we're seeing Of Montreal and Ted Leo the end of this week, so that promise shouldn't be too hard to keep. I feel like an old woman lately. We did, however, do something productive today when we put the shelves I bought last week up in my closet. I think that was the last big chunk of work I had to do to this place. As soon as I exchange a shelf that was too big for one that's a better fit, I can finally get rid of the last of the boxes that are still in my living room/bedroom/office. What a glorious day that will be! 02*22*06 Wow, so it really looks like my prediction about every horror movie made before 1985 being re-made by the end of this decade wasn't so far off. Not only are they remaking the originals, they're remaking movies that have already be remade as recently as the late 80s. For instance, The Blob and The Fly. Here's as comprehensive a list I can make of upcoming horror remakes: Evil Dead (wasn't the remake basically Evil Dead II?), The Wicker Man, Them!, The Hills Have Eyes, The Bad Seed, Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Scanners, Creepshow, Pirhana, Day of the Dead, Don't Look Now, The Hitcher (the original was made in fucking 1986! And it sucked), Night of the Living Dead (I know what you're thinking: didn't they just remake that in 1990? Yes, yes they did, but this one is in 3D!), The Omen, Sisters, Suspiria, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (yes it was remade twice already, but they changed a few things around in this one and called it The Visiting, so it's ok). I'm sure there are more, but these are all I can find worth noting at the moment. Craziness. 02*21*06 I spent a nice, low-key weekend with Matt filled with drinking, eating, watching a handful of bad movies and fooling around. Sunday afternoon I borrowed Matt's car to attend Alex's wedding. She looked gorgeous and I cried when she was taking her vows; it was very touching. Afterwards, I drove straight home and went to bed. The next morning I had to go into work briefly to send out a cornea since I was on-call for the holiday. When I returned home, Matt's car was gone. I immediately called him and started freaking out. I had left the car in a no parking spot that morning, but I figured with the holiday the regulations weren't in effect. But they were, and his car had gotten towed to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. We spent a few hours getting it back, and I am out $185 for the towing fee plus $60 for the parking ticket. Mere pocket change! I had a donor today. I couldn't help but notice the many fetuses in jars in the autopsy room where I did my procedure, so i asked the morgue attendant about them. He said they keep them for a few years just in case the families decide they want to bury them. He then put on some rubber gloves and removed a fetus that was about 2-3 months old and let me look at it in his hand. It was creepy-looking, but pretty amazing how little everything was. I'd say it was about 3 inches long. It looked like a mound of flesh with tiny twig arms and legs. The weirdest thing about it was I could see its little tongue inside its millimeter mouth. Don't get me wrong, I'm as pro-choice as they come, but I just found it fascinating how tiny we start out. One day I hope to have a fetus in a jar of my very own. 02*16*06 I just filed my taxes online and I think I should get back around $3100. I think I'll put half of that towards paying back my student loans, and the other half will go towards my vacation fund. I haven't traveled nearly enough in my lifetime. Today I got two cavities drilled and filled without Novocain. I told my dentist the shot hurt so much and for so long last time, that this time around I wanted to go without it. He basically said it was my funeral and drilled away. When he was all done, he congratulated me for not even flinching. It didn't hurt much until the end, and even then it was bearable pain. I'm a tough broad, ya hear!? My good friend Alex is getting married this Sunday. This is the first time I'll be attending a wedding of a friend. In fact, I don't think I've been to a wedding since I was 12. Anyway, I'm really happy for her and I'm really looking forward to the happy event. How is it 10 o'clock already? Meh. 02*13*06 I think tomorrow will be the first time I've had a boyfriend on Valentine's Day in three years. It's interesting because the wheels were set in motion exactly one year ago tomorrow for me to spend tomorrow with Matt. For it was last Valentine's Day I e-mailed a certain ex on a dating site for the first time to say hello. And of course it was that ex whom I met Matt through. Very interesting indeed. We're not doing anything too crazy. I'm just making him dinner at my place. For my Valentine's Day gift, Matt got us a fancy shmancy hotel room for our first night in Austin next month; the rest of the time we're staying with his friend. We bought our plane tickets on Saturday. I finally get to experience a Jet Blue flight. I hope it's everything the hype has lead me to believe. So it snowed a lot yesterday and I, along with many other Northeasterners, spent the day inside. Brook trekked over around noon and spent most of the day with me vegging out watching movies and eating too much. Good times. I also finished my kitchen this weekend. I would go as far as saying that I like it better than what I did with my last one. And as soon as I remember where I put my friggen camera, I'll take a picture. In the meantime you'll have to take my word that it looks awesome. More SNL skits I watched repeatedly this weekend: Sweet 16 and Lazy Sunday. 02*11*06 I rarely watch SNL, but I did a few weekends ago and thought this skit was hilarious. 02*09*06 After coming across an advertisement in a subway station tonight for this movie, I felt quite certain that I could accurately predict that every horror movie made before 1985 will be re-made by the end of this decade. Pretty soon they'll run out of older movies to re-make and be forced to re-do movies like Titanic and Jurassic Park. Give it time. I spent more money today on stuff for my new apartment. My supervisor jokingly told me a few weeks ago that this place is a money pit. I'm starting to think there was some truth to his statement. Matt invited me to go to Austin with him to visit his friends at the end of March. After mulling over the idea for a bit, I put in a request at work for time off so I could accompany him. I've never been to Texas. Then again, I never really wanted to go. I guess my visit with Rory in California will have to wait a little longer. Matt and I grabbed dinner at Kate's last night, then, after much internal debate, we headed over to see The Fall of Troy at The Continental. I used to be really into them a few years ago, and after a few drinks I convinced myself I could stand in a room full of pubescent teenage emo boys. It actually wasn't that bad. Matt felt like a senior citizen because clearly that's how one should feel when they're in their late 20s. But we got in for free, which made it all worth while...for me. I started to work out again yesterday. Apartment searching, moving and getting organized for the past few months has been quite a deterrent for me to eat healthy or keep fit. But my kitchen is almost set up, so I can stop eating out so much, and I'll try not to use home improvements as an excuse to skip the gym anymore. I'll just use some other excuse instead. 02*07*06 I went food shopping for the first time in about three months today. The supermarket by me is amazing; it has everything! So I went a little nutso with how much food I bought. I guess I figured I'd grow another arm to carry it all home. Instead, the woman ringing me up asked if I wanted it delivered. I said no at first, but then thought to ask how much it was. Two dollars! So I changed my mind and said yes. I'm starting to like it here better. Now if I could only get these friggen shelves up in my kitchen! 02*05*06 I accidentally just took a nap for three hours. Well, I meant to take a nap, but not for that long. And, oh no, it looks like I slept through most of the Super Bowl. Darn. I have a kitchen console to put together when I'm done typing this. Matt and I took the dreaded trip to Ikea yesterday. He kept warning me how that place breaks people up, but we survived. And I have a new sofa, shelving and kitchen console to show for it! This apartment is still a wreck, but at least now I have the tools to make it better. Anyway, that's still basically what I've been doing: trying to get this place together. I also called out of work sick Friday because I thought maybe I was getting strep throat again. I got my precious Zithromax, but now I think maybe instead that the area where my dentist injected Novocain on Tuesday had gotten infected and spread to my throat. In any case my throat feels better, but the spot where I got the injection still hurts like a bitch. Aww, my kitty is asleep on the new sofa. Meow.
